Les estivales de Pézenas

There is always a festival of some sorts going on in Pezenas – whether this be the bi-annual Brocante antiques fair, the wine festival, the film festival, the festival of theatre or the summer ‘Estivale de Pezenas’. The major festival in Pezenas though is undoubtedly the “Le Poulain” festival, where a mock horse is paraded through the town’s streets, followed by much noise and drinking.
During the summer season, every Friday at 8pm local wine maker propose to taste their production on the main place ( Cours Jean Jaurès and place Ledru Rollin), various plates of regional food are also served in a friendly musical atmosphere.

Le jardin de Saint Adrien

These are private gardens built in a disused stone quarry, that are opened up to the public on weekends. Various events are held, including music concerts, with horses dancing to the music in a shallow lake . One of the most popular events is the Venetian weekend, when models wearing venetian costume walk through the gardens, and pose for the amateur photographers amongst us to photograph them in this beautiful natural setting. There is amply parking facilities and there is the possibility to snack on site. Entrance is by way of a small fee.. (comment from Trip Advisor)

The historical center

Pezenas has a nice attractive old town, unspoiled by modern development, with narrow streets to explore as well as some grand 17th century houses. Its town centre was one of the first in France to be protected as an historic monument. There are numerous imposing houses from the 16th to 18th centuries including the Hotel Jacques Coeur, the Hotel Carion de Nizas and the Hotel de Lacoste among those to look out for.
There is also a well preserved Jewish ghetto in the town dating from the middle ages.

Le Théâtre Molière

At hardly 25, young Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, or Molière, began travelling the Languedoc with his Illustre Théâtre troupe, feasting or fasting as opportunity allowed.
Molière went on to become troupe manager and gave up acting tragedy. 1650 was a turning point in their lives; the Languedoc General Estates were held in Pézenas and the Illustre Théâtre was summoned to entertain them, ensuring it a good income for many months. The listed 1804 Italian-style theatre is also being restored. Molière never performed there, but it is still a memorable place. It will reopen after many years of work on it. The history shared by Molière and Pézenas has given rise to another project: the Molière memorial site, the only one apart from the Comédie Française to celebrate Molière and his work.

The Cirque is an extensive natural amphitheatre (it covers almost 1000 acres / 300 hectares) of dolomites -
There are several marked trails that lead through the cirque, of varying length taking between one hour and three hours to complete. Be sure to explore one of these because it is close up that the landscape is most strange and fascinating, in the most intact ‘cirque of dolomites’ in Europe.

Saint Guilhem le Desert, one of the ‘most beautiful villages of France’. Set in the Gellone Valley, it is in a beautiful and remote location, surrounded by the wild and rugged countryside of the Herault Gorges, with steep slopes and cliffs poised high over the village.

Le Pont du Diable 30’

The Pont du Diable on the Hérault River is one of many bridges in France with this name (it means Devil’s bridge). It is located over a steep-sided gorge, about 4 km north-west of Aniane in the Hérault département.
Constructed by Benedictine monks in the first half of the 11th century, it provided a link between the abbey at Aniane and the Gellone Abbey at Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. Though subsequently widened and raised several metres around 1770, it has retained its original shape.

L’abbaye de Valmagne à15’ (Private )

Welcome to the Abbaye of Valmagne. The actual church in classical Gothic style was begun in 1257 on the foundations of the original Romanesque Chapel, which had become too small for the increasing number of monks. Inspired from the great cathedrals of the north of France, it has 83 meters long and 24.5 meter high.

Marseillan Plage – 25minutes off the house
